“If I Had

Not Met You …”

Dear friends,

On a weekend In February, I took a bus to and from Harare in order to meet with Basers and participate in a Discovery Bible Study (DBS). I have done this a few times now and it is my way of caring for Basers and encouraging those who are participating in a Disciple Making Movement with us.

On the Friday night, I went out to dinner with Innocent Dombo and his soon-to-be-fiancée Samantha. He and I met during his first week at university and he was the first student to join The Base Community when we started as a student ministry in 2015. He was part of the first Lose Your Life course and he was the Student Body President during his senior year of college. In 2020, he moved to Harare and worked in construction. He is currently employed in the Ministry of Water and is earning a Masters degree in that field. I expect him to have significant influence there in the future.

During the evening, we talked about everything. Not only is he open to my advice, but he answers questions for me about how Zimbabwe actually works. The two of us trade being the master and the student. I am proud of him, and I tell him so.

As he drove me to my hotel, he said to me, “Jay, if I had not met you and joined The Base, my life would be very different”, meaning, he would not be following Jesus. It was my privilege to be in the right place at the right time and I am grateful for that.

On the Saturday, some Basers met for a DBS. Zirah (in front in the photo) organized the event at a restaurant in the city. I was encouraged because not only were there old friends there, but new friends. This means my disciples are making disciples, which is very important to me.

That reminds me of a conversation I had the weekend before that. I gathered seven men who participated in Lose Your Life in different years. All of them spoke about how they have applied what they learned. When I listened to them as a group, I realized that all of them who are employed have employees under them. Each of them is maturing and God is being glorified.

The next Lose Your Life course is scheduled for July and August. Stay tuned.
We have been in Zimbabwe for over ten years and we are seeing the fruit of our efforts. We also see the results of your prayers and partnership. Many of you contribute to our monthly expenses and others give to special projects. We have never lacked for funding. But even more, we have known the effects of your prayers. Thank you for every one of them. I look forward to heaven so that I can learn how each prayer was answered.

In Jesus,

Jay and Sarah
