The purpose of this ministry is to train Sunday School teachers to creatively teach children the Word of God through using inexpensive materials they have around their homes. We teach about discipline in the classroom and how to facilitate a session using crafts, puppets, games, drama, Bible memory, as well as how to put a simple lesson plan together. We give each teacher a years’ worth of teaching curriculum as well as a training manual. We are available for follow-up trainings.
The ministry to the youth in Zandspruit began about twenty years ago when Cherie Bulger, a former OCAfrica missionary, realized that there were no afterschool activities available for high school aged kids at the community centre where she volunteered. She decided to pilot a program for youth on Saturdays. She offered breakfast, teaching and activities that helped the young people to grow in their relationship with Jesus and to give them alternatives to the normal drinking and partying that happened in the informal settlement on the weekends. Barbara Siaki joined that Saturday ministry a few years after it began.
Ten years later, Cherie is serving in the USMC and one of the original youth participants, Nhlanhla Mubuyisa is heading up the ministry! Today there are daily programs for the youth from homework help to sport to computer training. On Fridays, Paul and Barbara drive in to Zandpruit to lead a time of worship, Bible teaching, small group discipleship and fun. It is wonderful to see how God is using this ministry to give hope to the young people and strengthen their faith.
